Description
Department of Chemistry, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan, Taiwan Republic of China.
Global awareness in the need of pushing green energy/industry into practice has reached the people in Taiwan. Corresponding national policies are being set in industry and relevant chemistry curriculum is given in some universities, research institutes and commercial companies, although sparsely at the present. A workshop centered on green chemical synthesis was held on February 1st, 2010 with a total of 125 participants encompassing academics, industries, and financial sectors. The program covered green chemistry related history, the 12 principles, the green feedstock, green synthesize, green technical procedures, and successful examples in industry. The purpose was to promote the concept of green chemistry and the awareness of the importance of green chemistry in the universities as well as in industry. A consensus was reached by a survey of the participants (81 out of 125 have been reclaimed) that green chemistry and related training in each individual sector (university, industry, and etc.) is currently inadequate in Taiwan. Enthusiastic response was received in having more similar workshops to be held in other cities than Taipei for promotion and canvass various opinions and demands. The Chemistry Promotion Center is obligated to set up the teaching materials (in Chinese) for the of green chemistry course in universities and training program in industry. The results will be reported in the coming meeting for exchanging and soliciting ideas.
