Track : Industrial and Environmental
Program Code: IND110
Date: Wednesday, May 9, 2007
Time: 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Location: 253 A
CHAIR :
. Simon Potter, PhD, Deputy General Manager, Ensis
SPEAKER (S):
John MacKay, PhD, Associate Professor and Director Arborea Project, Laval University
Elspeth MacRae, PhD, Group Manager Biomaterials Research, Scion
Shri Ramaswamy, PhD, Professor and Head Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering, University of Minnesota
Description
The concept of forests as biorefineries is to establish new standards and concepts for the processing of wood into biofibers, biofuels, value-added chemicals, polymers, pharmaceuticals and power streams. To succeed, the biorefinery must address sustainable productivity, value extraction prior to pulping and new value streams and niche products from residuals and the by-products of the traditional pulping process.

Objectives:
  • Learn what transformative impact biotechnology and tree genomics can have on the traditional forest industry.

  • Learn about the adaptation required to existing resources and plant to transform them into operational biorefineries.

  • Understand strategies for expanding existing and developing new value streams from the forest bio-resource.
