"Personalized medicine" has been common industry parlance since the Human Genome Project when the potential for pharmacogenomics was clearly suggestive of an eventual paradigm shift in clinical medicine, but the challenges have been legion. Western participants will have a unique opportunity to learn how the Japanese government, companies and care providers are structuring products and services to provide patients with personalized care and how they manage the market opportunities.

Review overall status of personalized medicine and research in Japan.

Describe technology systems for the clinical laboratory.

Review Japanese-U.S. collaborations in personalized medicine.
