Description
Videogames, blogs, social networking, faculty partners and corporate presenters are all key elements of the "hybrid" course at the University of Houston's Bauer College of business. This required, 3-credit, graded course, which meets once each week in the classroom and once each week online, has received overwhelming positive feedback from students, faculty, administration and corporate partners. After its first semester, the other colleges on campus and the local community colleges all requested access for their students to enroll in the course, titled "Connecting Bauer to Business." Enrolled students said classroom corporate speakers added tremendous value. But they also liked the online classes, as they allowed for topical discussions and online communities, which would have been impossible in the large lecture format of the classroom. The online projects include a videogame we designed specifically for this course, which won a Silver International Creative Summit Award in 2007, as well as group blogs, peer review of online mock interviews and resumes, and virtual team discussions. More importantly, the online peer review of resumes and mock interviews as well as online topical discussions gave them skills to support each other in the career development process throughout their time at Bauer.
