Description
"Recently, CNN reported on a graduate who is suing her alma mater for failing to find her a job. A nuisance suit sure to fail, it nonetheless raises a valid question: To what extent should an institution educate students to prepare, identify, pursue, and land gainful employment in their area of concentration? Are current efforts enough or is more required? What constitutes ""enough”? This session will detail a litigation-proof career entry track incorporated within an institution's complete educational offering, from workshops, seminars, semester courses, and lesson plans embedded in current classes. The result will be not only precautionary, it will be a powerful recruiting benefit. If this lawsuit does anything, it makes those paying for an education acutely aware that entering the job market better be a part of the college experience or else. Built around a ""Career Map,"" this program incorporates relevant career entry preparation ""locations"" throughout the educational process. Rather than drawing on overtaxed career center resources, it makes securing employment go hand-in-hand with existing career training, delivered by those educators with the most impact on students. Rather than being an add-on to education, the career center efforts that are too often underappreciated become a valuable partner with students eager to optimize their services.
