Career Services’ Offices are often not structured nor staffed to serve Ph.D./Master’s students as a primary constituent, yet it is a population on many campuses who are seeking more support and guidance in their career decision-making. Whether graduate students are considering the academic job market or non-academic career options, they are often at a loss as to where to turn. According to the 2010 Council of Graduate Student’s (CGS) Pressing Issues Survey, graduate deans indicated that job placement and career outcomes were a concern. Job placement and career outcomes were among the top 11 issues mentioned in the 2010 survey as compared to no mention at all in the 2009 and 2008 CGS Pressing Issues Survey. Over the last decade, Princeton’s Career Services Office has developed best practices (with a half-time career counselor) in collaborating with key offices that work with graduate students such as the teaching and writing centers, the graduate dean’s office, graduate student affairs, graduate alumni relations, and the academic departments, to increase our visibility on campus and offerings of career services for Princeton graduate students.
