Assessment of Learning Outcomes in Career Services: The 3M Approach
Track : CS
Program Code: 240
Date: Wednesday, June 1, 2011
Time: 10:30 AM to 11:45 AM  EST
Location: Texas Ballroom 2
SPEAKER :
Sam Ratcliffe, Virginia Military Institute
Description
In response to accountability expectations, assessment continues to grow in scope and complexity for career services professionals. Practitioners are being required to offer clear evidence of the learning we facilitate, the specific differences our services and programs make for students, and that the work we do provides an acceptable return on the investments of stakeholders. While the concept of learning outcomes is readily understood by most career services practitioners, comprehension of the specificity required for writing, measuring, and effectively reporting those outcomes is less certain. This session will focus on developing learning outcome strategies that are meaningful, measurable, and manageable – a “3M” approach to assessment. Topics covered in this session will include developing a learning objectives matrix, mapping and writing effective learning outcome statements, an overview of measurement options and selection of specific strategies, using the information to promote evidence-based decisions and improvement, reporting the related impact of programs and services to stakeholders, and building staff capacity for learning outcomes assessment.
