Tom worked for Extension for 20 years before leaving in 1997 to do what he really wanted to do--farm full time. Anne recently retired from her career as a registered nurse. Tom started with pumpkins, which we sold in the yard, in the early 90s, while still in Extension. In '97 we harvested our first crop (one acre) of u-pick strawberries and started growing sweet corn, described as "the best ever," which was sold the first year from our yard. Anne first tried doing a few pre-school field trips in the fall of 1996. That has grown into fifteen field trip weeks a year, with six staff per field trip and over 12,000 students and adults annually--all managed by daughter Amanda McCann. Our goal is to teach about agriculture in a fun way. We now have strawberries and farm stands at our home farm in Virginia Beach and a second location 15 minutes away in Chesapeake and we sell at a Saturday morning Green Market during the summer. Today we have four acres of u-pick jack pumpkins for the public and three acres of pie pumpkins for school field trips. We do Pumpkin Weekends on the Farm during October--old-fashioned fun with a modern problem: not enough parking area. We strive for quality, fun, and authenticity and want our customers to think of us as "their family's farm.

Description
We hold fall family fun-oriented "pumpkin weekends" during October at our farm in Chesapeake, VA. We grow the pumpkins on site. Customers are given cutters to take to the field, where they cut their own pumpkins off the vine. We also have horse-drawn hayrides and a small, old-fashioned play area for younger kids. New and VERY popular in 2010 was U-SHELL POPCORN--customers shell our home-grown popcorn from the cob using our antique, hand-cranked corn sheller. Brookdale Farm has become a favorite for those looking for low key, not scary, non-commercialized family fun in the fall.
