While much has been written about the extraordinary sensitivities of gifted children, little attention has been paid to their heightened sensory sensitivities and the potential for the physical environment to impact the intense inner experience of the gifted child, whether negatively or positively. This session will briefly review the research on the sensory sensitivities of gifted students, make a case for functionally addressing sensory sensitivities, and provide practical solutions to parents, teachers, and administrators for designing and arranging physical environments to mitigate potentially negative impacts on the emotional and intellectual well-being of gifted children and adults in educational settings.
