Description
Couples entering gambling treatment are often in crisis. Problem gambling impacts families at many levels, creating complex disturbances in emotional and instrumental functioning. These issues tend to build upon each other, creating negative cycles which can interfere with recovery, and entail loss of stability and support for the entire family. In addition, some level of stability is necessary for effective relationship counseling for the couple. This presentation will offer participants a straightforward guide to assessing and addressing common crisis issues presented by couples in early stage treatment, with the goal of increasing stability, reducing conflict and stress, and preparing the couple for longer-term relationship therapy. The approaches utilized are largely cognitive-behavioral and brief solution-focused, but they are grounded in the theoretical base of Emotionally Focused Therapy. Participants will be provided with an initial assessment guide and template, and a brief guide to couple stabilization. Through case examples and a role play they will learn and have the opportunity to discuss a set of specific interventions which will be of immediate practical value for any early stage case in which both partners are seen together.
