SPEAKER (S):
Description
As individuals with gambling related problems and their treatment professionals embark on the counseling and rehabilitation experience, differences in expectations can lead to strained relationships and subsequent poor outcomes. For instance, decisions to terminate counseling early in the therapeutic process can result largely from discrepancies between the client’s expectancies for counseling and what actually occurs in counseling. Thus, results will be presented from a study examining the congruence (or lack thereof) of how treatment professionals and clients with gambling related problems prioritize one facet of the rehabilitation process, clients’ case management and vocational needs. To this aim, research will show how treatment professionals and problem gamblers ranked 7 areas of concern (i.e., Psychological Issues – Person with the Problem; Family and Related Support Issues that Impact Recovery; Community Knowledge and Perception Issues Related to Support of Intervention and Recovery; Treatment and Recovery Support Issues; Basic Independent Living Issues; Workplace Environmental Barriers and Issues; and Internal Work-Related Issues) according to perceived level of importance for client recovery. While also rating how well the problem gambling treatment profession addresses these issues. Results and recommendations for treatment professionals will be provided.
