Description
This presentation will describe the “Voices of Problem Gambling Recovery (VPGR)” project. The purpose of the project was to provide consumers of problem gambling services to have a more central and viable voice. The project was modeled after other Grassroots organizations such as National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) where VPRG could become a dynamic force in the formulation of public policy, serve as a watch dog for the consumers of services, and educate the public by providing firsthand accounts of the impact of problem gambling. With this as a background, the goal was to establish an independent, self-sustaining entity that could assess and respond to the needs of the community in respect to prevention, treatment, and sustained recovery services for problem gamblers and their families. VPGR had its first meeting in September of 2008 with members composed of individuals who have been directly impacted by problem gambling (problem gamblers, their family members, their friends); were looking to serve their community, promote recovery, and educate others about problem gambling; and believed in creating positive change through volunteering. Since the organization’s inception, the group has been instrumental in shaping Oregon policy and contributing to the public’s awareness of problem gambling. The presentation will include hearing from members of VPGR and discovering why they became involved, what they are gaining through their community service, and their overall experience as a VPGR member.
