Michele Tantriella-Modell has thirteen years of experience working in the field of addictions. Michele has worked with clients with alcohol and drug addictions, domestic violence, and co-occurring mental health disorders. Currently Michele is program director of the Oregon Gambling Helpline, Meridian Problem Gambling Outpatient Program, and the Mental Health Program for Emergence Addictions and Behavioral Therapies in Eugene, Oregon. Michele also co-facilitates Group Skills Training for addiction certification for the state of Oregon as well as in-service trainings for Emergence staff.

Wendy Hausotter, MPH, coordinates the State of Oregon’s problem gambling prevention/outreach and workforce development programs. Wendy has over 25 years’ experience in public health, the last 10 of which have focused on addiction. Wendy has also held positions as Project Director for the Northwest Frontier Addiction Technology Transfer Center, Resource Center Coordinator for Addictions and Mental Health and adjunct instructor at Oregon State University.

Description
This presentation will focus on the services provided by the Oregon Problem Gambling Helpline. The helpline is often the first contact a person has in seeking help for his/her gambling problem. The effectiveness of using certified gambling counselors as call responders will be discussed and anecdotal experiences will be shared. A brief history of the helpline with be presented. Information regarding volume of help seeking calls, percentage of referrals given, demographics of callers, handling of non-English speaking callers will be presented. Protocols for crisis intervention will also be discussed. The presentation will highlight the innovation that the State of Oregon has brought to the helpline by implementing a web page with Live Chat capabilities; the webpage will be demonstrated live. This presentation will also discuss an evidence-based minimal intervention phone counseling program which is offered by the Helpline. How the program operates, who is appropriate for this service and why this program exists will be discussed. Referral and completion data will be presented.
