Program Code: 9308-S Monday, October 26, 2009
10:30 AM to 12:00 PM (ET)
MODERATOR Gregory Halverson, BS, MT(ASCP)SBB, DLM, Hoxworth Blood Center
SPEAKERS Steven Spitalnik, MD, Columbia University James Zimring, MD, PhD, Puget Sound Blood Center Research Institute Karina Yazdanbakhsh, PhD, New York Blood Center
DESCRIPTION
The humoral response to transfusion often leads to the alloimmunization of the recipient. In this session, antibody-mediated RBC hemolysis and clearance will be discussed. The speakers will review the role of T-regulatory cells in alloimmunization, discuss how the loss of antigen expression during immune-mediated RBC clearance limits the pathogenicity, outline the mechanisms of RBC destruction, and describe the pathological effects of hemolysis.
