DESCRIPTION
Transfusion has been and is associated with negative outcomes in the surgical population. Reducing or eliminating patients' exposure to allogeneic blood may reduce these outcomes. Identifying those at risk prior to surgery, diagnosing anemia and providing effective treatment will reduce the need for blood transfusion. Practice of blood conservation techniques in the operating room will further reduce the need for blood.
