DESCRIPTION
The advent of HIPAA has many implications for a blood center's information system (IS). However, the specifics of what to do are often vague and the technology layers and solutions vary in features as well as cost. This session takes a look at HIPAA from the IS side and provides a sample framework used by the Blood Center of Southeastern Wisconsin for assessing what IS needed to do to be compliant with HIPAA, as well as brief explanations of the various technology layers. A sample internal assessment template/methodology will be provided. OBJECTIVES

- Discuss the second phase of HIPAA as it relates to IS
- Develop a strategy to approach IS security to support Parts 1 and 2 of HIPAA
