Platelet Storage Issues
Program Code: 119-S
Saturday, October 23, 2004
2:00 PM to 3:30 PM (ET)

SPEAKERS
Fern Tablin, VMD, PhD, University of California
Salim Haddad, MD, Food and Drug Administration
Thomas P Stossel, MD, Medicine-Brigham and Women's Hospital

DESCRIPTION
This session will provide a review of the progress made in understanding the effects of cold temperature storage on platelets. A recent breakthrough discovery explains why platelets exposed to cold temperatures are cleared from circulation after transfusion. Two distinguished speakers will describe the effects of the cold exposure in molecular terms and outline how the new discoveries may lead to practical solutions of storing platelets in the cold.

OBJECTIVES

  • Discuss the effects of cold temperature storage on platelet performance in vivo
  • Describe novel molecular mechanisms of the platelet response to cold temperatures
  • Explain how the new discoveries can be translated into practical application for platelet cold storage

AUDIENCE
Physicians, Scientists, Technologists, Managers/Supervisors

PROGRAM LEVEL
