DESCRIPTION
This session will provide a process for establishing a blood conservation program within a hospital setting. The roles of the transfusion medical director and the transfusion serice staff will be discussed, along with the best practices and financial benefits of successful programs. In addition, the medical and legal aspects of transfusion and transfusion alternatives will be explored. OBJECTIVES
- Identify positive steps that a hospital can take to establish a blood conservation program
- Explain the medical and legal risks of transfusion
- Describe the important roles of the physician and transfusion service in the success of a blood conservation program
