Hematological Principles and Cell Counting
Program Code: 208-TC Sunday, October 24, 2004
8:30 AM to 10:00 AM (ET)
SPEAKERS Marie P. Holub, MA, MT(ASCP)SBB, Blood Systems, Inc. John Arthur Koepke, MD, Duke University Medical Center
DESCRIPTION
Have you ever wondered why you get wide variability of test results when a blood sample is tested using different hematology cell counters? This program describes the principles used to produce cell-count results. Instrument performance is discussed in relation to linearity, comparability and proficiency testing comparison so that you will have a better understanding of why the various instruments give different test results for the same measured analyte. The intent is to provide information to aid in the choice of a hematology instrument suitable for your testing requirements. OBJECTIVES
- Outline the principles of hematology cell counters used to measure direct, derived and calculated analytes
- Explain how different instruments can produce disparate results for the same measured analyte
- Describe the impact of the various cell counters on blood component and apheresis unit measurements
