DESCRIPTION
The first speaker will review aquaporin water channels in red blood cells and other tissues. The second speaker will provide a summary of the TRALI Consensus Conference held in Canada in April 2004. The third speaker will discuss new insights from the conference. At the conclusion of the session, there will be a general dicussion about TRALI. OBJECTIVES
- Explain the structure and function of the red blood cell membrane
- Describe the transport of water through biological membranes
- Outline the epidemiology of transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI)
- Discuss the current thinking as to the pathogenic mechanisms of TRALI
- Summarize the difficulties in diagnosing TRALI
