DESCRIPTION
This session will present an update on recent developments in clinical coagulation by leaders in the field, offering new concepts of activation and propagation of the coagulation system. Conditions leading to acquired platelet dysfunction and the clinical effect of these disorders will be presented. Clinical devices, e.g., TEG, used for near-site or expedited coagulation monitoring will be reviewed. Also, the impact of these devices on clinical outcomes such as transfusion requirement will be considered. The benefits and hazards of drugs used to decrease bleeding including Factor VIIa, anti-fibrinolytic agents and DDAVP will be discussed. OBJECTIVES
- Describe new concepts regarding activation and propagation of the coagulation system
- Discuss the impact and type of near-site coagulation assays such as thromboelastography (TEG)
- Explain the mechanism and clinical impact of acquired platelet dysfunction
- Determine the role of hemostatic drug therapy in the management of coagulapathic patients
