DESCRIPTION
To err is human, but knowing when and how to disclose errors is divine. The first speaker will present information regarding federally funded research in the area of ethics and errors in health care. The second speaker will address the topic of error disclosure. The third speaker will contribute comments regarding ethics and risks that are relevant to the blood banking and transfusion medicine communities. Case studies will be presented for audience discussion and analysis. OBJECTIVES
- Describe appropriate ways of dealing with errors in blood banking and transfusion medicine
- Explain how to have an empathetic conversation to deliver bad news
- Review situations where apologies may or may not be appropriate
- Discuss case studies involving errors in transfusion medicine and blood banking
