DESCRIPTION
Tranfusion medicine has evolved as a medical specialty from traditional, laboratory-based blood banking in the past 25 years. It now encompasses advanced understanding of blood component preparation, blood donor management, infectious disease testing and epidemiology, management of complex clinical cases involving blood products and research in fields such as cellular therapeutics. A clear definition of this specialty has yet to emerge, however, with significant overlap with hematology, immunology and laboratory medicine. Training programs for physicians in this specialty have had difficulty attracting candidates. A review of the focus and direction of these programs is in order. The speakers in this session will address these issues and propose new approaches for their resolution. AUDIENCE Physicians, Scientists, CEOs/CFOs PROGRAM LEVEL Advanced
