DESCRIPTION
Community blood centers encounter thousands of people daily as potential blood donors. The opportunity to engage these donors in a more comprehensive manner is enormous. Health information such as blood pressure and hemoglobin is routinely gathered and can be managed for the donor`s benefit. There are many other opportunities for health screening and assessment. In addition, blood centers have strong linkages to community hospitals. There are opportuities for medical directors and other blood center staff to integrate with the hospitals as staff members, educational resources and conduits for clinic referrals. By expanding these engagements with both donors and hospitals, community blood centers enhance their image as a community health resource.
