DESCRIPTION
Misidentification of patients has been recognized as a significant risk in transfusion medicine. Efforts are in process to improve bedside identification of patients both at the time of specimen collection and transfusion. The speaker will discuss the vision, design and challenges of applying electronic technologies to patient identification, donor unit verification and donor registration from the perspective of software developer. In addition, the speaker will describe how the use of knowledge-based systems in donor registration and patient bedside identification confronts error management and improves process efficiency and document management, while meeting the FDA mandate to incorporate bar-coding technologies into bedside medication administration.
