DESCRIPTION
Both immediate and delayed transfusion reactions pose complications that vary in severity, pathogenesis and management. The speakers will present an opportunity for all medical practitioners involved in transfusions to increase their awareness of common and uncommon reactions. The latest data will be presented from the recent Consensus Conference on transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI). A firm understanding of transfusion reactions will be provided to allow for timely, targeted and effective management in the vast majority of cases. In addtion, the importance of the appropriate role for the transfusion medicine physician will be discussed. OBJECTIVES
- Explain the underlying pathogenesis of various transfusion reactions
- Discuss recognition and management of the most common and most severe transfusion reactions
- Recite the new definition of TRALI
- Describe the importance of including clinicians and blood center directors in severe reaction workups
