SPEAKERS Susan Johnson, MSTM, MT(ASCP)SBB, BloodCenter of Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION
Many types of serological problems are encountered in the blood bank and transfusion service. Most are straight-forward but some require less commonly used tools to fully resolve. When unusual serologic test results are recognized more advanced methods are available to confirm initial testing and aid in diagnosis. This additional testing may provide vital information to the clinician in care of the patient. The speaker will utilize case studies to provide situations where the initial serologic testing along with the patient`s clinical history provided a clue to diagnosis. Each case will incorporate the use of advanced level testing to confirm the initial serology. A patient with drug-induced immune hemolytic anemia (DIHA), as well as a case of suspected hemolytic disease of the newborn, will be included. A few surprise cases "they didn`t tell us about" will also be presented.
