HPC Transplantation: Transfusion Requirements and Immunohematologic Complications
Program Code: 054589 Wednesday, September 14, 2005
2:00 PM to 3:30 PM (ET)
MODERATOR Jay H. Herman, MD, Thomas Jefferson University
SPEAKERS Jay H. Herman, MD, Thomas Jefferson University Thomas Klumpp, MD, Fox Chase-Temple University
DESCRIPTION
The practice of Hematopoietic Progenitor Cell (HPC) transplantation is continuing to grow, with diverse HPC sources and types of tranplants. Although HPC transplants are ususally Performed in academic centers, these patients return to their communities and the special issues surrounding HPC transplantation are of growing interest to many transfusion services. The transfusion requirements of HPC transplantation will be discussed in this program, especially related to platelet transfusion support. Special concerns regarding cytomegalovirus (CMV) transmission, blood irradiation, leukocyte reduction and compatibility testing will be reviewed. Since ABO and Rh incompatibility are not contraindications to HPC transplantation, there are interesting consequences to patient-donor mismatching, such as a change in ABO type. This provides a series of challenges to blood typing and compatibility testing, and sets the stage for a number of immunohematologic disorders. Two speakers will address these areas, along with ample opportunity for the audience to ask questions related to their own experinces.
