DESCRIPTION
In this timely new session, speakers will examine the application of FDA's mandate to ensure the safety and efficacy of blood components as applied to the potential re-extension of platelet storage to seven days. In addition, the clinical trial protocol devised by the AABB Taskforce on Bacterial Contamination to generate data to achieve this end will be explained. Potential logistic and economic impacts of the change will also be explored via up-to-the-minute presentations by experts in the field and a lively period.

  • Explain the FDA's requirements for clinical trials that will support extension of the platelet storage period to 7 days
  • Describe the impact of extended storage of platelet units on blood supply logistics and economics
