Blood Donor Complications: Recognition, Treatment and Risks
Program Code: 316-RC
Monday, October 17, 2005
10:30 AM to 12:00 PM (ET)

SPEAKERS
Thomas Wiltbank, MD, Blood Systems, Inc.

DESCRIPTION
The vast majority of blood donations are not associated with adverse reactions. However, reactions and incidents producing discomfort, and sometimes injury, do occur. They can be minimized by donor personnel who are trained in the techniques of donor selection and phlebotomy, who understand the factors that may lead to problems, and who are able to manage donor reactions appropriately. This program will outline policies, procedures and practices that blood center personnel can implement to assess and minimize the risk of donor reactions and injuries. It will also explore tools that management can use to track donor adverse reactions and reduce the risk to the organization from donation complications and litigation.
