DESCRIPTION
This session is intended to update participants on some of the common issues facing perioperative blood management programs today. Topics to be covered include: the new 2nd edition of the AABB Standards for Perioperative Autologous Blood Collection and Administration; controversies around the use of blood recovery during surgical procedures when malignancy, infection or amniotic fluid is present; the state of the science and clinical application of platelet gel; and the role of preoperative hemoglobin optimization.
