DESCRIPTION
There are approximately 15-16 million whole blood collections per year and 1.2 million platelet collections by apheresis a year. In the last few years technology has been introduced to collect double red cells by apheresis. Each collection procedure brings with it a risk of complication. As the sophistication and automation of the collection processes increase, the potential for more severe reactions are possible. As blood collection professionals, it is our responsibility to ensure that the donor has a safe and pleasant donation experience. To accomplish this we must have knowledge of the potential complications, presenting symptoms and early interventions. When more severe complications occur, we need to know how to swiftly intervene. These topics and more will be covered in this workshop. The attendee will leave with the knowledge and the tools needed to protect donors, keep them safe and encourage them to return.
