DESCRIPTION
In the last 20 years, the recruitment of volunteer blood donors has been affected by increasing levels of donor screening that now encompasses medical, personal, and even travel histories. At the same time, new tests for infectious agents have been added to screen donated blood. Clarifying donation status and retaining eligible donors can be challenging as qualifying criteria for donors become more stringent. This program will review past donor deferrals and how they have changed. It will also assess what future donor requirements are possible and examine the programs that can be initiated to recruit previously deferred donors.
