DESCRIPTION
For years the primary management of hemoglobinopathies was essentially restricted to transfusion therapy. Even with transfusion there remains confusion over the type of units to select, phenotypically matched or not; and when to upgrade from simple transfusion therapy to red cell exchange. The management of hemoglobinopathies has progressed over the last decade. This workshop will include discussions on both Sickle Cell disease as well as Thalassemia. Current transfusion practices will be reviewed along with pharmaceutical approaches to disease management. Attendees will also hear current data presented from two major clinical trials that offer promise for more than symptom control.
