DESCRIPTION
Unlike other acts of terrorism, incidents involving the use of radioactive material may induce few non-specific symptoms or, depending on the event, significant complex injuries in the setting of a nuclear detonation. Individuals exposed to a significant level of radiation will manifest hematologic, gastrointestinal, cerebrovascular and neurologic symptoms that compose the acute radiation syndrome. Recently, guidelines have been published for managing acute radiation syndrome, including recommendations of the CDC's Strategic National Stockpile Radiation Working Group to administer supportive care, cytokines and antibiotics, and to transplant autologous stem cells. Recently, interest has been expressed in forming a consortium of transplant centers that may be called upon to provide support. Three discussants will review these topics as they pertain to radiation injury, response planning and countermeasures.
