DESCRIPTION
The success of hematopoietic stem/progenitor transplantation relies on the
ability of stem/progenitor cells to find their way in the extravascular
bone marrow compartment in specialized niches where they receive signals
for growth and differentiation. It is increasingly appreciated that
there is more than one type of stem cell. Early stem/ progenitor cells
are programmed to either be quiescent, self-renew or divide and
differentiate before egressing into the peripheral circulation. This
seminar will introduce the audience to the current understanding of
molecular mechanisms underlying these processes and how this information
might lead to innovative translational research in the future.
