DESCRIPTION
The field of transfusion medicine has evolved from its early beginnings which were restricted to the provision of end-stage blood cells such as red cells, platelets and granulocytes, for transfusion. As the field of stem cell transplantation grew, the AABB discovered that, by use of apheresis and modern techniques of molecular biology, the field of transfusion medicine had a major role to play in the collection, preparation and infusion of stem cells for transplantation for a variety of hematologic malignancies.
Over time, the AABB integrated into the field of oncology in a variety of ways, not only in various scientific arenas, but also in voluntary and Federal regulatory areas, as well as sectors related to quality control, quality assurance and cGMP. In the future, the AABB and the field of Transfusion Medicine will play an increasing role in the burgeoning field of regenerative medicine as mononuclear cells recovered through a variety of blood bank and apheresis maneuvers are used to provide cells to bioengineer new tissues and blood vessels to treat a variety of non-malignant conditions. Thus, the field of transfusion medicine will continue to evolve and redefine its niche, in an ever-changing world of biomedical technology.

This award began as a lectureship in 1963 and was designated as a Memorial Award in 1983. The person who receives this award shall have demonstrated teaching ability and have made a major contribution to the field of immunohematology and transfusion medicine or cellular therapies. Acceptance of the award requires attendance at the Annual Meeting and the presentation of a lecture.
