DESCRIPTION
The role of "Critical Path" research in OBRR is to provide a scientific framework for regulatory actions including risk assessment and communication, establishment of product standards, and facilitation of product and policy development to address known and emerging safety issues. Historical and more recent examples of FDA's scientific contributions to blood safety will be summarized, and current challenges and opportunites will be discussed as part of FDA's vision for 21st Century medicine. In particular, novel technologies on the horizon such as nanoparticles, advanced molecular characterization, genomics and proteomics offer opportunities for advancement in product safety and efficacy, which will be discussed.
This award, renamed in 2005, honors leaders from the blood banking and transfusion medicine community, including Bernice Hemphill, W. Quinn Jordan, and Joel Solomon. The award recognizes an individual who made significant contributions in the areas of administration, quality programs, law and/or government affairs. The individual shall have demonstrated leadership qualities and a consistent willingness to lend his/her expertise to his/her peers. It may recognize one particular act or an accumulation of years of contributions. Acceptance of the award requires attendance at the Annual Meeting and the presentation of a lecture.
