DESCRIPTION
The past 10 years have seen significant improvements in the molecular understanding of blood group antigens. This seminar details how molecular diagnostics and its resultant application are becoming implemented for the benefit of the patients. In the first part of this session, the clinical problems remaining with current blood group serology are identified and the molecular bases of blood groups are explained. In part two, advantages of genotyping are evaluated and novel mass scale genotyping technologies (that add value for patient care) are assessed.
