Description

OBJECTIVES:
  • Review trends in prevalence, incidence and residual risk of transfusion transmitted HIV and HCV

  • Assess the difficulties and low odds of linking current suspected cases of transfusion-transmitted HIV infection to blood donors.
  • Recognize profiles of test seeking blood donors and those using a confidential use exclusion option in Brazil.
  • Review a proposed novel role of the histo-blood group Pk as HIV resistance factor.
  • Discuss the performance of a 3-stage HTLV-I/II antibody testing algorithm for blood donor screening and hear new epidemiological data linking HTLV-II infection to increased mortality from all-causes and from cancer.
