OBJECTIVES:
  • Determine the current distribution of infection with Babesia microti among blood donors in the US and the accompanying risk to transfusion recipients.
  • Review approaches to reducing the risk of transfusion-transmitted B. microti in the US and the costs of one such intervention.
  • Recognize the threat of transfusion-transmission of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in parts of the US.
