OBJECTIVES:
  • Examine the yield and benefit of individual donation nucleic acid testing among blood donors in South Africa.
  • Describe demographic differences and health status of HCV positive former blood donors, and participation in and effect of antiviral treatment in this group.
  • Assess the apparent risk of transmission of seasonal influenza A by transfusion.
  • Review the principles, differences and advantages of two commonly used methods to estimate incidence among repeat blood donors.
  • Summarize findings regarding optimizing methods and processes for detecting bacterial contamination in platelet donations.
