Translation of Cell-Based Therapies
Description
Similar to blood component therapy, more recent novel cell-based therapies build on the concept of using live human cell populations for increasingly specific therapeutic interventions. The cell manufacturing procedures of cells is a highly regulated process addressing among others scale-up, standardization of procedures and equipment, and validation of manufactured cells. The session will highlight the important role of transfusion medicine expertise in a team approach to the technical and regulatory challenges inherent with translational research. Several examples will illustrate the time-line and multi-step progression from proof-of-principle discovery to bedside application of clinical grade cell products.
This award began as a lectureship in 1963 and was designated as a Memorial Award in 1983. The person who receives this award has demonstrated teaching ability and has made a major contribution to the field of immunohematology and transfusion medicine or cellular therapies.
-
