Nursing Knowledge and Performance Gaps in Transfusion Safety
Description
Nurses and other transfusionists serve as the patients' advocates to ensure safe blood component administration and outcomes. This program will provide insight into two different ways that our advocacy is manifested: A new Transfusion Safety Officer will report on her experiences during her first year on the job; and information on the emerging understanding of Transfusion-related Iron Overload (TRIO) as an untoward long term outcome of extensive RBC transfusions will be discussed.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Describe the symptoms of Transfusion-related Iron Overload (TRIO).
  • Discuss the process of professional development from staff RN to Transfusion Safety Officer (TSO).
  • Explain strategies for improving transfusion safety in hospitals.
  • Explore strategies for identifying patients who may be affected by iron toxicity.
