Description
This is an interactive session. Platelet transfusion practices are often based upon historic practices and fear of adverse outcomes rather than data from studies. This session will use a series of scenarios to query the audience for opinions on how they would manage product selection and platelet transfusion. A panel of experts will present the current literature and lead the discussion of the controversies in the decision to transfusion, choice of product, and dose for providing effective transfusion therapy.

  • Assess the issues surrounding the use of prophylactic platelet transfusions for invasive procedures.
  • Describe the use of platelets in patients who are hypercoagulable.
  • Discuss the effects of plasma constituents in platelet transfusion.
