A Practical Strategy for Screening Apheresis Platelets for High Titer ABO Antibodies
Dr. Laura Cooling, MD, MS, Associate Professor, University of Michigan
Description
Platelet-mediated hemolytic reactions may be under-recognized, but account for up to 20% of acute hemolytic reactions in some hemovigilance reports. This session will begin with an overview of the role of ABO in platelet transfusion therapy. Speakers representing different facilities will then describe their experiences with hemolytic reactions from platelet transfusions, and how they evaluated the pros and cons of mitigation strategies.

  • Describe the role of ABO in platelet transfusion therapy.
  • List strategies that may reduce the risk of hemolytic reactions from platelet transfusions.
  • Recognize hemolytic transfusion reactions as a potential complication of minor-ABO incompatible platelet transfusions.
