Computer Physician Order Entry: Steps Toward Safer Transfusion Practice
Benjamin Rioux-Masse, MD, FRCPC
Simulation-Based Education for Transfusion Medicine,
Dr. Jed Gorlin, M.D., M.B.A., Medical Director, Memorial Blood Centers
Using Computer Physician Order Entry (CPOE) Systems to Help with Consent and Compliance., The Role of Transfusion Medicine Training in Emergency Medical Response Systems
Description
Traditional transfusion medicine education is normally static, with often untrained surgeons or anesthesiologists passing on advice to residents. One institution developed a series of simulations using "Betty B. Bleedn," a physiologically responsive dummy. One simulation portrays Betty having an acute hemolytic transfusion reaction, while another shows Betty needing a massive transfusion. The session will show videotapes of some live training sessions, with residents learning transfusion medicine in action. This session will also highlight the advantages of using a computer physician order entry (CPOE) system for ordering transfusion components. A CPOE can help to reinforce adherence to requirements for transfusion consent and compliance with transfusion guidelines. The speakers will discuss the implementation of CPOEs in various hospitals. Finally, some emergency medical response systems have incorporated transfusion medicine into their mass casualty drills. This session will describe some of the education aspects, and detail how this education can be put into action.

  • Describe the key elements required in an emergency medical response system.
  • Evaluate the use of videotaped simulations to classical training techniques used to teach transfusion medicine.
  • List the ways in which a computer physician order entry system(CPOE) can help with compliance to transfusion guidelines.
