Description
The use of information technology to generate efficiencies and improve operations is a critical success factor for blood centers. The electronic medical record has reached highest level of attention from health-care legislators, and now blood centers are engaging in this paradigm shift. The session will provide attendees a unique perspective on how two blood centers set and achieved the daunting goal of becoming a paperless organization. The attendees will gain an understanding for key technology considerations including software, infrastructure, integration, and end user mobile devices used and the challenges confronted in moving to an electronic donor record in both fixed-site and mobile settings. The session is also designed to provide attendees with the an understanding for how to successfully establish and manage a project of this magnitude, and keep key stakeholders invested to ensure buy-in and end user acceptance of the new technology. Additionally, session participants will understand the challenges and strategies used to adopt SOP and process standardization across two blood centers operating in different geographical regions. Moreover, the audience will learn the ins and outs of how these blood centers prepared for, trained, and retooled their workforce to move from an operationally inefficient paper driven process to a fully automated electronic donor record.

  • Develop SOPs and design and implement training to automate electronic donor records.
  • Identify key decisions in selecting a technology for a paperless environment and the key challenges and obstacles organizations will need to address.
  • Review project management methodology principles used including project initiation, project management organization structure, tools and communication approaches used to reduce risk and keep project on track.
