Use of EMRs for Patient Blood Management
Description
This interactive workshop provides a forum within which participants can to share practical lessons, innovative learning methodologies and effective data collection processes within PBM programs. Multiple topics of interest will be presented by speakers from active U.S. and Canadian programs, including practical strategies and data collection methods used to promote evidence-based blood utilization and transfusion practices; educational methods ranging from the basic lecture to simulation labs and online tools to improve transfusion practice and critical thinking skills across disciplines; and "in-the-trenches" stories of gains made in improving patient safety through a commitment to PBM. An audience response system used by participants will provide rapid assessment of current practice and trends in response to questions posed by speakers.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Describe current methods used to facilitate education regarding transfusion practice.
  • Examine strategies to develop critical thinking skills throughout the blood administration process.
  • Identify critical steps and potential pitfalls that can be experienced when developing a patient blood management (PBM) and transfusion safety program.
  • Investigate innovative, evidence-based methods for PBM and transfusion safety programs.
