Description
Education committee members of the Indiana State Association of Blood Banks (ISABB) will share their journey of creating a culture of communication change in the interactions between nursing and lab departments. This lecture and event review presentation will outline the ISABB process to create an instructional climate, selection of speakers and topics, evaluation and feedback, and outcomes leading to continued growth and expansion of an annual symposium. The session will conclude with a case review of a hospital's implementation of lessons learned by staff attending the symposium.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
  • Compare lessons learned in program development for future expansion of topics and program delivery.
  • Describe a community hospital's efforts to employ lessons learned to change the culture of transfusion safety, policies and procedures within its organization
  • Identify gaps in nursing knowledge in relation to laboratory expectation for blood administration and transfusion safety.
  • List steps performed by a state organization to create a diverse annual program to assist hospital in meeting accrediting requirements and enhance communications between nursing and laboratory personnel.
